Why Getting Older is So Scary

I don't have to tell you that we live in a culture that embraces youth and beauty which makes getting older a time of slow panic for some or even damaged self-esteem for others. TV commericals, product ads and celebrities tell us that their anti-aging products will make us look more youthful and ward off the inescapable lines and wrinkles only we often end up disappointed again and again. This "anti-aging" culture has created an obsession to combat aging that only adds to the pressure that to be beautiful means you have to remain young. Yes, there is a growing albeit slow movement to appreciate beauty at all ages but none of it helps when we look in the mirror. I don't know about you, but every day that passes is a sign that time is taking its toll. Getting older for so many women is more than just becoming wise and more than just wrinkles showing up on your face. Aging starts to show in your hands, your arms, your legs - something that you can't stop. But you can certainly slow it down!
I have always been a bath person. I know many people aren't. Not because they don't enjoy the steamy, hot water and the luxury of soaking in a warm bath after a long day, but usually because they don't think they have time for it. It seems like time keeps speeding up and work, kids and responsibilities are more and more demanding such that time for self has become a luxury that few can afford. But as the philosopher William James once said, "When you have to make a choice and don't make it, that is in itself a choice."
Choosing to take time for yourself, is not a selfish choice. It is one that benefits you not only in the present but in the long term. Imagine how your skin will look when year after year you have soaked in a hot bath infused with scented bath oil. I can tell you from personal experience, watching my skin dry, scale and sag is terrifying, but I can see the difference in only a few seconds once I step into a hot bath infused with herbs and oil.
The Magic of Bath Oil: Why It Works
Bath oils are more than just fragrant additions to your bathwater. They are carefully crafted blends of natural oils designed to hydrate, protect, and rejuvenate the skin. When you soak in bath oil, the oils create a delicate barrier on the skin’s surface, locking in moisture and preventing dryness. This is especially important because dry skin can accentuate fine lines and dullness, making the skin appear older than it is. Soaking in an oil infused bath brings instantaneous and nearly magical results.
I remember the first time I tried a bath oil infused with jojoba and sweet almond oil. As I soaked, my skin felt instantly softer, and the subtle scent wrapped around me like a whisper of calm. The oils penetrated deeply, leaving my skin supple and glowing. This is because a bath oil that contains essential oils also includes antioxidants and vitamins that support skin cell renewal and protect against environmental stressors.
The National Health Institute says:
Soaking in hot water with bath oil deeply hydrates, softens, and nourishes skin by creating a protective, lipid-rich barrier that locks in moisture. The heat opens pores to allow oils to penetrate, while improving circulation and relaxing muscles. It effectively relieves dry
skin, leaving it smoother, more supple, and glowing.

The Science Behind Youthful Skin and Bath Oils
Understanding how bath oils contribute to youthful skin requires a peek into skin biology. Our skin is made up of layers, with the outermost layer called the stratum corneum acting as a protective shield. Over time, this layer becomes dry and damaged, leading to rough texture and visible signs of aging. This is where a good exfoliant (body scrub) can do its magic. You will begin to notice dry patches on your arms and legs. Yikes! (Try our honey based body scrub and you will notice a difference almost instantly.)
Bath oils help by replenishing the lipids in this outer layer, restoring its ability to retain moisture. This hydration plumps up the skin, so that lines and scales (OMG) begin to smooth out. With the addition of antioxidantsm, free radical (unstable molecuiles that accelerate skin aging) are neutralized.
One of the most fascinating aspects is how bath oils support the skin’s natural repair processes. Ingredients like rosehip oil are rich in vitamin A, which promotes collagen production. Collagen is the protein responsible for skin’s firmness and elasticity.
Incorporating bath oils into your routine can also reduce inflammation and redness, common culprits in aging skin.

Signs of Aging Isn't Just Physical
Transforming your bath into a mindful ritual is about more than just the products. It’s about slowing down and tuning into the sensations around you. While you may see signs of aging as the years pass, you don't need to panic or give up on feeling beautiful. You've no doubt heard the quote "beauty comes from within." Usually such sayings go on to say that the qualities of confidence, authenticity and a kind spirit are qualities of beauty, but, I don't know about you, such phrases don't help me reduce the panic I feel when I see wrinkles appearing on my toes! To me, "beauty from within" is more about self-acceptance and self-love. So my bath time also includes closing my eyes and allowing myself to feel safe, comfortable and beautiful.
When I prepare my bath, I start by dimming the lights and lighting a scented candle. The soft glow creates a cocoon of warmth and tranquility and the scent fills the air adding to the mood I want to create.
Next, I add a few drops of scented bath oil to the running water, watching as it disperses and perfumes the air. My favorite is Jasmine. The scent is subtle but enveloping, adding to the scent of the candle, inviting me to breathe deeply and let go of the day’s worries. As I sink into the water, I feel the silky texture of the oil coating my skin, and remind myself to be present in this moment.
To enhance the experience, I often use a natural sea sponge to massage body wash into my skin while soaking. This not only helps the oils absorb better but also stimulates circulation, which is essential. The ritual becomes a dance of touch and scent, a celebration of self-love and care.
If you want to make this ritual your own, here are some tips:
Choose your favorite scent: Whether it’s calming lavender or uplifting Jasmine or soothing Rose, pick a bath oil that resonates with your mood.
Set the scene: Use candles, soft music, or a favorite book to create a peaceful atmosphere.
Take your time: Aim for at least 20 minutes of soaking to allow the oils to work their magic.
Follow with gentle moisturizing: After your bath, pat your skin dry and apply Amunari's Nourish - a scented body lotion to seal in hydration.
This mindful approach not only enhances the benefits of bath oil but also nurtures your overall well-being.
Embracing the Ritual: More Than Just Skin Deep
Bathing with oil is a gentle reminder to slow down and honor yourself. It’s a moment to reconnect with your body and mind, to nurture your skin and spirit alike. Over time, this ritual becomes a sanctuary - a place where you can shed stress and emerge renewed. When you step out of the bath, you will immediately notice a difference in your skin and afterwards - usually for the next few days - you will notice the incredible smoothness of your skin, all the way up your legs, across your arms and body. You, again, will feel beautiful. When you feel beautiful, that is the "within" that will express your beauty.
I find these moments of quiet indulgence ripple into other parts of my life. My skin glows with a softness that feels like a reflection of inner calm. The simple act of soaking in bath oil becomes a metaphor for self-kindness - a daily ceremony that celebrates longevity and radiance.
I invite you to start with a small bottle of bath oil and a quiet evening. Let the warm water and nourishing oils carry you to a place of peace and youthful glow. This is more than skincare - it’s a sacred ceremony inspired by ancient traditions, designed to help you feel radiant inside and out.
You can read all the studies you want, but the best experience is your own. People are shocked when they realize my age! I attribute it to the ritual that I have enjoyed for decades of soaking in a hot bath infused with scented bath oil. My skin says it all. Its a simply ritual with exponential results. Try it. You just might like it!
